BIOGRAPHY

Matt Casey's track record in catastrophic injury practice is long and distinguished. In 2016 alone, he recovered more than $87 million for individuals and families in wrongful death, brain and other life-altering injuries sustained from the negligence of others.

“Work ethic was a big part of growing up in my house ... and what led me to do the work that I do. Trying to help people who are up against powerful interests, who had terrible things happen to them and need someone to fight for them.”

In just one four-month span, he was responsible for recoveries of $29 million, $26.5 and $26.3 million, and $20 million. Here are just a few of his notable cases:

  • $85 M in compensatory damages for a premises liability case where a college student fell 20 feet into an open manhole; the company that owned and operated the manholes had prior notice the covers were being removed

  • $60 M for his integral role with partner Joel Feller in the global settlement for victims of former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky; the firm represented seven sexual assault victims

  • $36.4 M settlement as co-counsel in a case involving a damaged hydrogen tank explosion that killed a man, among the highest nationwide for a wrongful death one-victim case

  • $22 M in a record-setting bad faith case against an insurance company that refused to pay a man catastrophically injured in a car accident. The insurance company settlement followed a $19 M verdict won by Casey, the largest motor vehicle settlement in the U.S. as of 2014

  • $23 M for a medical negligence case involving a home health care nurse who failed to evaluate and report an infected catheter, causing the patient double-leg, below the knees amputations

  • A confidential settlement achieved mid-trial on behalf of the family of a young woman who suffered a brain hemorrhage in a wrongful death medical malpractice matter
